Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do/ Jun Fan!
|
|
|
|
Jun Fan & Jeet Kune Do are the Methods & Concepts of Bruce Lee
Jeet Kune Do uses only the most efficient technique, economy of motion,
with rapid & multiple hitting! BRUCE LEE'S concepts use only certain elements
from several systems and combines them to create fast effective street
technique. This is not for tournaments, but is for street effective protection
that works now!
*DO NOT BE A VICTIM of a CRIMINAL ASSAULT *
Don't be afraid of a weapon attack. Learn to use what's on or around you
as a weapon! Learn by doing.! Learn by playing fun easy two person
co-operative training drills. Simple efficient training drills develop
instincts and abilities, memorizing forms does not! Don't think it, Feel it!
Program it in! These are drills designed specifically to improve physical
attributes; speed, balance, timing, rhythm, reflex, sensitivity, accuracy.
Feel and become familiar with lines and angles of attack and the best
responses. We will analyze and are aware of the possibilities of each line
that can attack!
* Sense, opponents distance,
* Feel opponents energy
* Intercept opponents strikes
* Trap and lock opponents limbs
* Pressure points and locking will control and manipulate opponents
body to be where and in the way you want to cause the most damage, or just to
get out of a lock or grasp.

He called himself Bruce Lee for the English speaking USA; Lee Jun Fan was his
real name in Chinese. When needed by Media he felt forced to call it something and
used his name! If it can be said that Bruce Lee had a system of Martial Arts Jun
Fan kickboxing was it!
|
Jun Fan was composed of the knowledge he had experienced in China
(mostly Wing Chun Kung Fu, and the animal systems of Gung Fu ). This was the early
phase of his development after moving to back to the USA. The next development and
much of his time was in San Francisco and the Seatle Washington area. He met and
trained a few students while studying philosophy at college. His students at this
point were learning mostly Wing Chun, which was being shaped and modified by him as
time and experience went on. Examples of instructors in this time period
are James Demile, Jessee Glover, Taki Kamara, James Yim Lee, and Ted Wong. He
had met Ed Parker who was trying to unify and start up tournaments and demonstrations.
This opened Bruce up to meeting even more famous Martial Artists of the time
including Dan Inosanto. He and his now wife Linda and moved to the
Los Angeles area. Ed Parker of Kenpo Fame who was promoting
Black Belt tournaments and becoming known as the father of Karate. Not long
after Parker ntroduced Bruce to his black belt Dan Inosanto he started
training with Bruce. Other of Parker¡¦s Black Belts began training with Bruce
as well. He wanted to persue an acting carrier and was teaching a handful of students out of
his home. Training mostly in back yards till the opening of his China Town School in LA.
Many were all ready good Martial Artists. Most of the private lessons he
began teaching involved Dan and was mostly Movie Starts of the time who became suporters
of his. Bruce did some teaching/ trading of knowledge, did a lot of researching and experimenting.
Many types of Martial Arts. Dan and he became very close friends, exchanged and
adapted many ideas in the training. He never really cared to coin a name as a system.
But when popularity started to hit and he needed to call it something.
He used his own name in Chinese; Lee Jun Fan or just Jun Fan. So US people could call
it something, his film career took more and more of his time, he relyed more and more on his senior student
Dan Inosanto (who he later certified as Instructor under him) to teach his schools and keep them
progressing for him.
Things were becoming more organized, in 1967 the China town school
opened. The idea of the intercepting fist (way) hence the name Jeet Kune Do was now born.
Now much more experimenting, research, trading information. Many
influences including Filipino and Indonesian martial Arts. Many principles
were adapted into his style. Boxing, Thai boxing, Savate foot fighting, Jui
Jitsu, Western Wrestling and other forms of grappling, fencing were adapted. He
added only the most direct, efficient movements of about thirty six systems. The criteria
for choosing certian techniques was based on effectiveness for street defense purposes.
This meant of economy of motion. Only and certian techniques were picked that flowed
and fit together well, and application drills were choosen that would best develop
the physicle attributes needed to drill in fast effective movements till little thought
was needed, to feeling, antisapate and intercept the opponents energy.
Bruce became well known and respected. He met and trained many famous people. Some who
were very talented already in Martial Arts. He would absorb techniques from them as he taught
them and continued to research. The Filipino Martial Arts which included sticks, knives, swords,
nunchucko's and such were absorbed by Bruce. Bruce was experimenting with only
what he felt were the simplest most direct motions that would work in self
defense situations. He did not care about training in many systems as much as
determining which movements were most economical and fit with the base he was
developing. Certain training methods like his Wing Chun drilling verses kick
boxing proved to allow his reactions to attacks to be spontaneous and
flourish. Developments led him to create something outside of any given system
that had ever been before. A style of no style, concepts involving
deflections, interception of motion and manipulation of the opponent. Instead
of blocking and overcoming with just power and force.
(In my experience; Below are important Top level Jeet Kune Do Instructors to remember)!
|
JKD's first criteria became that movements represent economy of motion,
(meaning only the fastest most efficient street effective technique). The
second criteria became the training methods. No matter how effective or how
efficient a technique was, one had to be able to do any and all technique automatically
without thinking. So they must be trained well, and in a manner that creates
physical attributes, and cause them to be program into the mind automatically
(like riding a bicycle or developing skills in basketball). Many elements and
techniques involving entering, trapping skills and finish techniques from many
systems that all fit together well was used. Mostly two man co-operative
training drills is the manner used to train. This all led to discovery about
the human body and body physics, (motion, rhythm, reactions, timing, effects
of distances). Soon the concept of Jeet Kune Do had evolved from the roots of
Jun Fan. |
Dahms Academy Class Descriptions
Jun Fan Kick Boxing classes
(Level 1) = Jun Fan (the system Bruce Lee founded) kick
boxing. Teaches the five methods of attack. Kick boxing basics, with pad and
gear training! Wing Chun Kung Fu, and other trapping. Limited use of circle
stepping, and a modified with a right power side lead stance, step and slide,
bounce and hop, and pendulum footwork is used. High, low, high concepts,
awareness, speed, timing, distance drilling. Peripheral vision, scat drills,
flow and energy drills. etc..
Jeet Kune Do classes
uses Jun Fan basics, plus other elements methods,
and concepts that fit together well ! There are two basic criteria's that make
something JKD. The techniques must represent economy of motion (meaning fast,
effective street technique, not tournament or sport)! Second those methods
must be trained and practiced in a way that programs in and develops the
physical attributes needed to use them well without thinking in a realist
fight situation. We cross train and absorb efficient elements of many systems
of martial arts that are useful or work well together. That is the philosophy
that makes it what we call J K D. or Jeet Kune Do. We will use this philosophy
to drill, test and analyze motions used in the most effective Martial Arts
styles and absorb what is useful and discard the rest! Learn what is absorbed
from them and what is not; and the unique way these techniques can be put
together, the attributes you'll develop and the energy and flow that is
created. Learn fast effective entries, follow ups and finishes which come from
Chinese Gung Fu, Philippine Kali, Indonesian Silat, Thai boxing, Savate, Jui
Jitsu, and other forms of grappling! The average person can learn to be fast
and effective in street fighting technique in a few hours per week. You do not
have to be big, strong, or in great shape !

Bruce absorbed what was useful and discarded the rest when he picked/ blended
many principles/ elements that he felt fit together well for Real Self Defense.
He researched many styles, elements of about thrirty six were picked. Influences
